KBA’s New Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Sustainability Committee

Mrs. Ibtisam Al-Haddad – Head of the Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Sustainability Committee at the Kuwait Banking Association and General Manager of Strategic Planning and Follow-up at the Commercial Bank of Kuwait, stated on the occasion of the first World Clean Energy Day following the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of a resolution in August 2023 declaring January 26 of each year – The anniversary of the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency in 2009 – a World Clean Energy Day, which this year coincides with the establishment of the Kuwait Banking Association, a specialized quality committee concerned with focusing on environmental, social, and corporate governance sustainability standards. The establishment of such a committee, in turn, represents a pivotal step that reflects the sector’s commitment. The banking sector is pushing the wheel of sustainability at the country level, stressing the importance of developing clean and renewable energy sources because of their positive role in achieving social and economic development goals in addition to environmental sustainability and highlighting the effective role played by the banking sector in this scope.

This comes within the broader context of the State of Kuwait’s 2035 vision in accordance with the pillars of the development plan, where the banking sector plays a crucial role in advancing sustainability by directing financial flows towards national projects through sustainable financing, stressing that strategic investments in clean energy and infrastructure projects reflect… Clearly committed to the sector.

From this standpoint, Al-Haddad confirmed that the establishment of the Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance Sustainability Committee under the umbrella of the Kuwait Banks Association represents a pivotal step towards fruitful cooperation at the level of the banking sector in the State of Kuwait that leads to unifying efforts and enhancing effective contributions within the scope of sustainable development.

Mrs. Ibtisam Al-Haddad concluded by stressing the need to renew commitment to sustainable practices on the occasion of World Clean Energy Day, calling for strengthening collective efforts to achieve a more environmentally responsible era, noting that today’s transformation paves the way towards a sustainable future.

Sheikh Ahmad Duaij Jaber Al Sabah is the Chairman of Commercial Bank of Kuwait since April 1st 2018, after holding the position of Vice Chairman from 4/4/2015 to 31/3/2018 and Board Member from 29/4/2012 to 3/4/2015 In his capacity as Chairman of Commercial Bank of Kuwait , Sheikh Ahmed Duaij Al Sabah has been nominated as Chairman of Kuwait Banking Association . He is also a Board member in Kuwait Institute of Banking Studies. Furthermore, Sheikh Ahmed held the position of Board member in Kuwait Clearing Company representing Commercial Bank of Kuwait from 2018 until 2019. And the Chairman of Al Tijari Financial Brokerage Company from 2014 until 2020. During his tenure with Al Tijari Investment Company (CBK Capital) from 2010 to 2012 Sheikh Ahmed was Project Finance Manager , and Acting Portfolio Manager and Manager Private Equity, prior to that and specifically from 2005 to 2010 he worked with Commercial Bank of Kuwait in the Shareholders Service Unit. Sheikh Ahmed started his career after graduation with Kuwait Petroleum Corporation in the capacity of Corporate Planner. Sheikh Ahmed Duaij Jaber Al Sabah graduated with Master of Business Administration from Maastricht School of Management in March 2008 after obtaining his Bachelor degree in Science with a major in Finance from Bentley College – United States of America in May 2000 .
